The Giver
Chapter 1 - Summary
Jonas is "Eleven” and he is nervous about what is going to happen in December. He lives
in "the community”.
Jonas is at dinner with
his family talking about their feelings. Jonas's Father, a "Nurturer," someone who takes care
of newborn children, said that he will bring home a boy who is not in good health.
Each family has two
children, one boy and one girl. Jonas's Mother, who
works at the Department of Justice, talks about a "repeat
offender," someone who keeps breaking the rules, he could be
"released". The release could be a punishment; is done for older people,
and for newborns who can't be raised in the community.
Jonas said he is worried about "the Ceremony of Twelve". Jonas's parents said Lily to leave so they can speak with Jonas in private.
Chapter 2 - Summary
Jonas remembered the other Ceremonies, like when Lily was, a One. Every
year fifty babies get named. There are many Ceremonies; The Ceremony for the Ones and The Ceremony of Twelve, etc. The Nines receive a bicycle.
It is not allowed to ride a bike before nine, but everybody breaks this rule. The rules are established by the Elders and are not
changed. The main person is The Receiver, someone who nobody knows.
In the Ceremony of Twelve every kid would know what occupation they receive. Jonas does not have any idea about what would be his profession.
Chapter 3 - Summary
Jonas's Father brings
home the sick baby. Lily says he has "funny eyes" just like
Jonas, that mean "light-colored" eyes while most of the people has dark eyes. Lily said that maybe Gabe and Jonas had the same birth mother. Lily wishes she could be a Birthmother.
There are many loudspeakers in the community. Jonas remembers that when he was a younger and took an apple
from school, he heard a message about not hoarding snacks. Jonas took the apple when he was playing with Asher and the apple changed four times, but Asher
did not see anything.
Chapter 4 - Summary
Jonas goes to find Asher to do their "volunteer hours" after school. This is really the
only thing he can decide by himself. Children
start volunteer hours when they become Eights.
Jonas went to find Benjamin who works at the Rehabilitation Center, and who
knows everything about the job at this place. He finds Asher's bicycle near the House of the Old, next to Fiona's
bicycle.
Fiona is a cool girl and she has a good sense of humor.
Fiona is a cool girl and she has a good sense of humor.
Chapter 5 - Summary
When Jonas and
his family were at breakfast they share their dreams. Jonas usually does
not remember his dreams, but today that is different.
Jonas had dream, where he was
in a bathtub, he was bare-chested. Fiona was also there and he wanted her to get in the tub with him
When Jonas finished his mother said that these feelings are called
"Stirrings," he has to tell them every time this happen, and
that he has to take a pill. Everyone takes
these pills, every day, until they go to the House of the Old.
Jonas thinks that the "Stirrings" felt good. He wants to feel
them again but he took a pill and he forgot his dream.
Very good, but you need more facts please!
