The Giver
Chapter 9 Summary
After everyone left the auditorium, Jonas wanted to go with
Asher but he was not sure about that. Jonas feels something has changed in his
life.
When the family was at dinner, Jonas wanted to know about
the receiver that failed ten years ago. His parents do not talk about it, they
said it was a girl but they did not say her name that never would be used not
even for new babies. Jonas asked what happened to her, and his parents said
that nobody knows.
The new Twelves received instructions for their training.
Jonas found just one sheet of paper. He has to go to the Annex entrance behind
the House of the Old school. When the training session is finished he has to go
home immediately. He can make any question to anyone. He can’t talk about his
training or his dreams. He can't take medicines, he can't ask to be released,
and he can lie. He was surprised about these rules.

Chapter 10 Summary
Jonas and Fiona go to the House of the Old. Each one at a
different place.
He called the door and is received by a woman who greets him
as "Receiver of Memory". She entered The Receiver's room, which was
locked. It was strange for him. The Receiver's room has a bed, a desk, a table,
etc. There are many books that Jonas have
never seen before.
Jonas saw the old Receiver in the corner. Jonas thinks the
man is too old, and The Giver said it is because of his job. The Giver will
show to Jonas the memories of the entire world.
Jonas, wanted to know about "snow",
"sled" or "runners". The Giver showed him the memory of
snow.

Chapter 11 Summary
Jonas feels very cold. He found that he is on a sled
surrounded by snow. The old man said that the community does not have those
things because scientists have controlled the climate. Later Jonas received the
memory of "sunshine."
Jonas understands that he is now The Receiver, and the old man is The Giver.
