The Giver Chapter 6 - 8

The Giver

Summary

Chapter 6 - 8
Jonas is about to discover some unexpected changes in his life. Firstly, his sister Lily is very happy because she turns Eight. She is about to get more independence.

All families are going to the Ceremony where all the kids will receive special assignments and treats according to their ages. These are the professions or activities that a person have to do in his life. No one can decide by itself, what he or she wants to do. During this Ceremony the parents are a couple of days out of work.
Jonas is watching the Naming at the Ceremony of Ones. Gabriel will not be there because the Nurturers gave him one more year of care before assigning him to a family or to release him.

Jonas is not comfortable because it seems too long before he could know his assignment.
When the Ceremony begins, it starts with the Ones, then the Twos, and so forth. The new Nines receive bicycles as a sign of new independence. The Ceremonies of Tens and Elevens are just boring.

Later the Ceremony of Twelve begins, Asher receives the Assignment of Assistant Director of Recreation, which is not a surprise because he has always been a funny boy. Fiona, the friend of Jonas, receives the Assignment of Caretaker of the Old.
Every one of Twelves received an assignment, but the Chief Elder did not call Jonas. He is worried as much as all the people in the auditorium.

When every kid received an assignment, The Chief Elder said that Jonas will receive a very special assignment.

Jonas was selected as the new Receiver of Memory for the community. This is a very important job that requires some special qualities: intelligence, courage, and the Capacity to See Beyond.

Jonas was surprised by that decision.

A few moments later, the people starts to cheer Jonas as a sign of approval.
