The Giver

Chapter 19 Summary

Jonas wants to know what happened to the twin boy that was released that morning. The Giver thinks that is not good for anyone. Jonas says that he could not watch and The Giver says that all ceremonies are recorded in the Hall of Records.

The Giver asks his Attendant to show them the video. Jonas saw that his father weighed each twin on a scale. The heavier baby is sent back to the Nursery. The Giver tells Jonas to be quiet when Jonas saw his father injecting something lethal in the forehead’s twin.

The baby is dead and is put in a garbage chute. Jonas becomes very angry. The Giver also did not like to see that, because he had seen the release of Rosemary, when she injected herself.

Chapter 20 Summary

Jonas and starts crying; he realized that his Father had lied to him all the time and he did not want to see him. The Giver tries to comfort him and says that his father just followed the rules. Jonas asks The Giver if he ever lied to him and the old man says he never lied. Jonas understands that Release means death for everyone. The Giver says that they are the only ones who have emotions in the community.

The Giver realized that these things have to be changed, then he says Jonas that they need to find a way for that change. Jonas has to go to Elsewhere so the memories will be released to the community. The Giver has to stay to help the people. They both know they would be killed if the Elders know what they are going to do. The Giver says that the memory to perceive beyond it is music that he used to hear.

Jonas is planning his escape to Elsewhere. The Giver will give him the memories of courage. The night before December Ceremony, Jonas will leave his house, he has to hide his bicycle and clothes by the river. He has to go to the Annex to see The Giver.

Jonas has to write a note that says he went on an early bike ride. His parents will go to the Ceremony without him. No one should notice his absence. The Giver will not attend the Ceremony, the man will ask for a vehicle that will be send with Jonas hidden inside.

When people notice that Jonas has gone they will ask The Giver to help, and the man will say that Jonas accidentally drowned in the river.

Chapter 21 Summary

Suddenly the things take a different way when Jonas’ father said that Gabriel is going to be released the next morning. Jonas has to escape that night, he took his father’s bike to carry Gabriel with him. Jonas transmitted to Gabriel the memory of a rocking hammock to keep him asleep and quiet.

Jonas rode all the night and in the morning he had breakfast with Gabriel by the side of a stream. They got a place to hide and sleep during the day. For several days Jonas hides in the day and travels at night. There are many low-flying search planes with heat-seeking devices trying to find them.

Jonas tries to use the memories of cold to avoid the search planes. He noticed that his memories are fading as he moves further. He knows that the memories should be released to the citizens.

A few days later he did not see searching planes anymore.

 

 The Giver

Chapter 22 Summary

Jonas and Gabriel are very far from the community. The land is different than that they knew. At some point the bicycle turns over and Jonas twisted an ankle.

Jonas starts to travel in daylight. Everything is different and he sees a real bird for the first time in his life. Later, they see more and more animals.

They are running out of food and Jonas catches two fish from a stream. Then, Jonas thinks that he would be very hungry if had he stayed in the community but Gabriel would have died. He took a decision and he would keep that up.

Jonas sees hills for the first time. Later, it starts raining and they are hungry, they are wet and freezing. Gabriel is starts crying for all that things. Jonas is also crying because in that difficult situation he has to save Gabriel.

The Giver

Chapter 23 Summary

Jonas feels that they are close to Elsewhere. He thinks they could die when it starts to snow. Jonas has to protect the baby, but riding the bike is not easy with all the snow. Then he starts walking and he starts to think about sunshine. Jonas tries to transfer the warmth to Gabriel.

When Jonas is about to reach the top of the hill, they are freezing and very tired, but he is happy with memories of Fiona, Asher, his family, and The Giver.

Jonas finds a sled from his memory. He took Gabriel close to him, and star going down the hills. He knows that they will find Elsewhere at the bottom.

Jonas can see lights and colors and he thinks he had hear music for the first time in his life. He thinks they will find another people and he also thinks he heard music from the community he just came.
